IMMIGRATION
Sagamore is a section in the town of Bourne, MA. The town of Bourne, MA, was originally settled in 1640 as part of the town of Sandwich, MA. In 1884, it was made part of Barnstable County. Sagamore is located on the northeastern corner of Buzzards Bay. The oldest shop in America, Aptucxet Trading Post, is located here. Bourne was considered the first town of Cape Cod. Many people immigrated to Bourne for various reasons. This town isn't the kind of place that people would leave their country for in search of a new life. Instead, they would come for work. Most immigrants didn't come directly to Bourne and Sagamore though. A lot of them started up towards the city of Boston, and moved out to western Massachusetts. Once the building of the Cape Cod Canal started in the 1900s, immigrants started flooding in to find decent work and good pay. Currently, Sagamore resides on the Cape Cod canal, towards the opening of Buzzards Bay. This area is rich in work involving fishing and boat work. It thrives in its fisherman-like culture, remaining a town highly dependent on the ocean since it's creation. As of the 2000 census, there were about 18,000 people residing in Bourne, and 3,544 people residing in the Sagamore area. Also, only 1,307 households, and 968 families residing in the town. As you can see, this is a relatively small section of the state. Another statistic to prove this is that the population density is very small, only 1,056/mi(2) according to the 2000 census.
