Traditional Music

Starting out with simple things such as drums as wooden pipes, the instrumental design of the music expanded over the centuries. Now, there are five key instruments that are involved in playing traditional Irish Celtic music. These instruments are the bodhran, the uilleann pipes, the celtic harp, the fiddle, and the Irish bouzouki. The Bodhran is a big hand held drum that is struck with a stick to provide the beat of the music. Uillean pipes have been around since the fifth century and are very similar to bag pipes. They are much smaller and have fewer pipes but provide the same kind of sound a bagpipe would produce. The Celtic Harp has been around as early as the tenth century. This instrument has a small, triangular structure and is strung from corner to corner with strings that are plucked to produce different pitches. The fiddle is a violin-like instrument, but has a much higher pitch and different sound than a violin. Lastly, the Irish Bouzouki is basically a giant mandolin. It has a big presence and provides bright tones.
Cultural Celtic Music still has a heavy influence in Bourne today. Examples such as Flynns Irish Pub still flourish with tradition Irish foods and live music.
